Let's Shrink Ray

Let’s Shrink Ray was a 3D role playing game about a scientist named Ray who, through his experiments, has shrunk himself to the size of an ant. Unfortunately for him, the tool he used to shrink himself with had shattered in the process and the parts disappeared. It was up to Ray to head out into the wide world to find all the missing pieces, restore his tool and turn himself back to normal.

The project involved working in large teams and developing a 3D game in a professional manner. The project had a fairly short development window of only 6 months. I was present on the game design team and I was primarily tasked with the pacing and flow of the gameplay. My priority herein was to create core gameplay loops that were fun and engaging for the target audience.

Throughout the project I have designed several gameplay loops and elements fundamental to the game, created the game’s tutorial, worked on difficulty balancing, conducted user testing, conducted analyses and communicated with other artist- and IT teams in order to develop this product.

Development was done in an agile and iterative manner and at several points throughout development prototypes were created and communicated with stakeholders to ensure requirements were met. Additionally, the product has been improved based on user testing feedback prior to release.

At the end of development, a functional beta version of the game was released without any issues and has since been presented at several events: Dutch Game Garden, Night of the Nerds and at ICA Presents. It has been received positively by both stakeholders as well as the target audience.
